Every person in America has a right to healthcare. It is not a privilege; it is not something that has to be earned. It is not something that people should have to shop around to find. Our Constitution guarantees life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. If someone with an illness wastes away because they can’t afford medicine, or medical treatment, their very life is being denied. If someone is chained to an employer in order to receive coverage for an existing condition, their freedom is taken away. If someone must bankrupt themselves and their family merely to survive a medical condition, they are denied pursuit of happiness.
America must provide healthcare for all of its citizens because it can, and it should. Every other nation in the world with our level of wealth manages to do this. Only we do not. The only reasons we don’t are simple cruelty and greed. A human being desperate to live will put up with anything, just to continue to survive. Those who make obscene profits, and those who manipulate the struggling are the only ones to gain from this. We don’t end up a stronger country — we end up a sick, enslaved country. You will shut up and do your job, lest you die.
How we get there is immaterial — whether we use the Canadian system, the French System, or Medicare for all– this is the subject for debate. But the end result must be universal care for all Americans. This does not preclude a separate private system for those who wish to spend a great deal of money on their care, but the days of insurance companies deciding what gets covered, and hospitals outrageously jacking up rates in anticipation of insurance companies denying things left and right must end. The days of drug companies making making artificially large profits because the government does not buy medicine in bulk must end as well.
For the record, I support HR676
We have the resources and we have the wealth. All we need is the will to heal our people and bring the manipulators to heel.
