My first inclination was to call this page Trump and the Russians. That title, while pointing in a correct direction, is not pointing in the most important direction. Yes, Trump colluded with Russia to get elected. In return for financial support, he and quite of few people close to him in his campaign– including his campaign manager, for God’s sake– sought out or actively welcomed Russian support to sabotage his opponent and tamper with our election. This isn’t really debatable anymore. He has been under investigation for this since summer 2016, and under investigation for money laundering with the Russians for even longer than that.
But that’s not the big problem– not the problem jeopardizing our democracy itself. This is not the issue that has us on the verge of becoming a dictatorial vassal state of an international criminal (Vladimir Putin). All of Trump’s mendacity, treason, and criminal activity could be brought to light in a second and washed away.
That is, it could, if the party holding the majority of seats (through a fluke of voter distribution and flat-out gerrymandering) decided to put country first. Trump and Putin’s grip on America could be washed away instantly, if the majority party in Congress simply decided to do it’s job and and let justice be transparent and unimpeded in service to the American people. Seriously, that’s all it would take.
Unfortunately the Republican party has no interest in fair play, justice, or love of country. Donald Trump is a convenient tool for achieving their aims of wealth transfer to the ultra-rich and dividing the country with a stream of lies. They are as guilty of treason as Trump is in their overt complicity. The Republicans are doing Putin’s work because they are on his side– the side of graft, theft, and violent suppression, not to mention white supremacy and misogyny writ large.
Think I’m joking? Check out this article in the Washington post. Here’s the salient bits:
KIEV, Ukraine — A month before Donald Trump clinched the Republican nomination, one of his closest allies in Congress — House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy — made a politically explosive assertion in a private conversation on Capitol Hill with his fellow GOP leaders: that Trump could be the beneficiary of payments from Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“There’s two people I think Putin pays: Rohrabacher and Trump,” McCarthy (R-Calif.) said, according to a recording of the June 15, 2016, exchange, which was listened to and verified by The Washington Post. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher is a Californian Republican known in Congress as a fervent defender of Putin and Russia.
House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) immediately interjected, stopping the conversation from further exploring McCarthy’s assertion, and swore the Republicans present to secrecy.
and this little tidbit at the end…
Some of the lawmakers laughed at McCarthy’s comment. Then McCarthy quickly added: “Swear to God.”
Ryan instructed his Republican lieutenants to keep the conversation private, saying: “No leaks. . . . This is how we know we’re a real family here.”
Or how about Mitch McConnell refusing to sign a bipartisan statement condemning Russian interference in our election. Don’t just take NPR’s word for it. Google it and you’ll find 7 other separate sources on the first page alone. as I indicate in my introductory essay, these guys are more than willing to reap the benefits of hate, and racial division in order to achieve their nefarious political ends. Not a single nationally-elected Republican has any honor in this matter. Not even John McCain, Jeff Flake, Susan Collins, or Ben Sasse. Not one stood in the way of any Trump justice pick (including the travesty that is Neil Gorsuch), not one stood in the way of any cabinet pick (token votes don’t count). And most importantly, not one has stood up for an open investigation of the most blatant act of treason in American history. They all have, with their votes, supported the complicity with treason. Some of these people may tut-tut trump’s outrageous statements, but will not lend their voices and their votes where it matters.
The entire national body of the Republican party is complicit with treason against the United States of America.
